Scientific Advisory Board
Biocrates has been able to recruit a scientific advisory board of experienced professionals covering both the company’s core technology and its main areas of R&D activities, i.e., biomarker research and companion diagnostics.
Dr Klaus Weinberger
Klaus Weinberger is a biomedical scientist with particular expertise in metabolomics, infectious diseases, public health, and immunology. Weinberger was employed as Chief Scientific Officer of Biocrates for a period of nearly 9 years. Before that, he led a research group specializing in clinical virology, infection immunology, and molecular epidemiology at the Institute for Medical Microbiology and Hygiene at the University of Regensburg, Germany. Weinberger is currently serving as the VP for R&D at Bavarian Nordic in Martinsried, Germany. Weinberger holds a PhD in medical microbiology from the University of Regensburg. He serves as a referee for scientific journals and European public science funding organizations. He has been awarded the triennial Saul-Krugman-Award for substantial contributions to molecular and clinical hepatitis virology (Atlanta, 2000), memberships of the WHO reference center for viral hepatitis (Regensburg, 1996) and the WHO collaborating center for virus-associated cancer (Regensburg, 1994), and a 5-year-scholarship by the Bavarian Ministry of Education (Munich, 1989–1994).
Professor Dr Giulio Superti-Furga
CEO of the Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna, Professor Superti-Furga is one of the leading experts in chemical proteomics, systems biology, and oncological drug development (tyrosine kinase inhibitors). He is a preeminent scientist and has a track record of successful biotech management (e.g., cofounder and scientific head of Cellzome, Heidelberg).
Dr Christian Schudt
Former head of the department for inflammation research at Altana Pharma, Konstanz, Dr Schudt’s scientific focus is on respiratory diseases, diabetes, rheumatology, and sepsis, covering several biomarker indications and one in the pipeline for further developments. Dr Schudt pioneered the implementation of metabolomics in pharmaceutical R&D, e.g., by assessing the anti-diabetic efficacy of drug candidates using the targeted metabolomics platform in mouse models.
Dr Herbert Schmidt
Herbert Schmidt has nearly 30 years experience in various management functions at major health care companies with a focus on medical diagnostics. Until 2002, he was head of global marketing and business development at Roche Diagnostics, responsible for sales of about €bio1.5. Since 2003, Dr Schmidt has been running his independent consultancy, Strategic Direction, having worked with numerous research companies worldwide. He holds a PhD in Physical Chemistry.
Professor Dr Werner Poewe
Professor Poewe is head of the department of neurology, University Hospital Innsbruck and one of the leading authorities on neurological disorders, with a focus on neurodegeneration and movement disorders, such as restless legs syndrome or parkinsonism. As head of a large neurological clinic, Professor Poewe is instrumental in defining the medical goals for this area of biomarker research.
